The Process
There are a number of steps involved in utilizing a freelancer, especially one who will be involved in your documentation. While other consultants may conduct themselves in a variety of ways, this is how I generally proceed with a project.
1. First Contact – You and I get into contact, typically via email. There we discuss the type of work that is required, the time frame, and the budget. I determine whether the work request is feasible within the stated constraints, and either redirect the work request or accept the project and proceed to step two. (Duration: 1-2 days)
2. Setting Expectations – Here I will discuss exactly when the due date is, the expectations for the work, and the type of work. A work contract will be created, signed by both parties, and work will begin. (Duration: 1-4 days)
3. Resource Provision – Generally speaking, I will require examples of what you will want done, or I will need the old version of documents so that I may update them or reformat them in the manner agreed upon. For documents that are purpose-written on a particular process, reference materials for that process will be required for purposes of review and image acquisition. (Duration: Varies – based on swiftness of resource provision)
4. Writing – Per the specifications, I will begin the project. If I require further documents or materials I will be prompt in letting you know. If there are any unexpected challenges during the project, I will communicate them immediately, especially as they may impact the ability to meet the due date. (Duration: Varies – based on extent of project. Shorter pieces of writing or moderate updates/rebrands take days. Construction of complete manuals may take weeks.)
5. Invoicing – Once the project is completed, you will be notified and you will be sent an invoice with the parameters specified once more. (Duration: 1-2 days)
6. Payment – Once payment is made, I will send confirmation that it has been received. A second communication will follow, containing either the created documents or a secure link to access them, per your specifications. (Duration: Varies – based on swiftness of payment)
7. Review – I will invite you to review the work at your earliest convenience, to assure that all parameters were met and no further adjustments or edits are required. (Duration: up to you)
8. Conclusion – In general, shorter one-hit projects may be completed within one business week, but will more likely take two or more. Longer projects may take several weeks.
